I am a registered psychologist with 25 years experience in private practice.
Before becoming a psychologist, I was a registered secondary teacher. After studying eight years at the diocesan seminary of Corpus Christi, I was ordained to the priesthood. Appointments as a priest included the parishes of Fawkner, North Melbourne, St Patricks Cathedral, Parkville and Carlton. I was a member of the teaching staff at the diocesan seminary and director of the Pre Marriage Education courses. In 1978 I was a Co-founder of the Family Relationships Institute Inc. From 1976 to 1983 I was a clinical psychologist at the Queen Victoria Hospital in Melbourne. Since 1997 I have been a regular contributor to the Relatewell Journal.
Doctors have patients who expect to be cured. To this end the doctor gives a diagnosis, prescribes medicine or operates.
Psychologists have clients who are experiencing problems which are disrupting their lives or causing distress. Psychologists help people to discover the nature of their distress, their contribution to their distress and come to a recognition that the solution to their problem lies within themselves as they discover their ability to change their behaviours and their thought patterns.
